Doctoral student: "Participation in the double degree program of ANAS and the University of Montpellier gives great advantages in terms of integration into world science"

Based on the cooperation agreement between ANAS and the University of Montpellier of France on joint research and doctoral studies, a joint doctoral program for the 2018-2024 academic year is being implemented.

After completing 2 years of study at the University of Montpellier and 1 year at ANAS, doctoral students are eligible for doctoral degrees both in Azerbaijan and France.

Since 2018, 6 doctoral students under this program continue their studies at the University of Montpellier.

Our interviewer Said Pashayev, a participant in the doctoral competition received a double degree between ANAS and the University of Montpellier, announced in 2019 . A doctoral student at the Institute of Physics, who conducted research while studying in France, he stated the advantages of doctoral studies at the University of Montpellier and answered all concerned questions .

- As we know, ANAS successfully continues its activities in the direction of integrating Azerbaijani science into the world, creating unity of science and education, preparing highly qualified personnel. One of the works in this direction is the signing of a cooperation agreement with the University of Montpellier in France, the implementation of doctoral studies on a double diploma. You are one of the candidates who got this opportunity. What advantages did you get using this software?

- Using the program allowed me to become a doctoral student at the University of Montpellier, which, along with ANAS, has many years of experience and it is among the 500 best universities in the world, and has  many other advantages.

-Before the admission of the program, a meeting is held between university's leaders. Applicants for their chosen research topic are identified with the appropriate conditions in the laboratories in which they will work, they are interviewed, and the relevant candidates are admitted to the program.

-The research topic is almost entirely experimental. Equipping the laboratory in which I work with all the necessary equipment and instruments allows me to easily conduct experiments.

- Participation in the dual degree program of ANAS and the University of Montpellier also gives great advantages in terms of integration into world science. Thus, we have the opportunity to take an active part in international conferences held here. Along with this, since young people from many countries study at the university, conditions are created for familiarization with the science of different countries.

- What are the directions of your research? What is currently being done on the dissertation?

- At present, we are conducting research on the experimental part of my dissertation on "Study of the structure and phase transitions of confined water within a single-walled carbon nanotube." The main purpose of our research is to study nanoscale corporate water. Since this project has a wide range of applications, both biologically and technologically, we have started researching this work. From a biological point of view, in the future we strive to study both cancer and the processes occurring in the nanochannels of the human body. In the technological direction, it is planned to study the processes of purification of sea or other water. Although many filters are currently used to purify these waters, their rapid destruction requires new research. We are working to create filters that last longer and purify seawater faster than salt with the technology we use.

- What problems did you face while studying in France? Please tell us about it.

- The main problem was that I was quarantined after entering the country due to a coronavirus pandemic, and then for some time restrictions were imposed on the equipment in the laboratory of the University of Montpellier to conduct research on only one person. Thus, in order to conduct independent research on the equipment, it was necessary to first undergo training, but the applied restrictions did not allow it.

- You would talk about your relations with Azerbaijanis working or studying here. In what work do our compatriots support you?

- We feel great support from the Azerbaijanis operating in Montpellier. At weekly meetings, we discuss our research and other issues.

I would like to note that before the start of this program between ANAS and the University of Montpellier, the number of people who knew our country was very small. Currently, there are 5 students studying at this university in Azerbaijan, and the number of students is expected to increase to 10 according to the program. I can say that some ideas have already been formed about Azerbaijan at Montpellier University. We have mobilized all our opportunities to represent our country worthily in France.

-What are the common and distinctive features in the doctoral system applied at Montpellier University and ANAS?

- In the doctoral studies of both scientific institutions, preference is given to experimental work. Recently, equipping laboratories with the most modern equipment  allows us to deepen work in this direction. At the same time, I can say that during my stay at the University of Montpellier, I witnessed a large number of seminars. This is very important from the point of view of a broader discussion of the research, overcoming the problems faced by doctoral students in research, as well as identifying and collaborating with doctoral students conducting research in a similar field.

- In what directions do you plan to continue your research in the future?

- The main feature of carbon nanotubes used in our current research is that they perform both a sensory function and other biological applications. The capabilities of these nanotubes in Azerbaijan can be used in several directions. In the future, these nanotubes can be used in the production of bulletproof materials, gas sensors.

I plan to continue my doctoral studies after completing my doctoral studies. Since my research is one of the most promising areas, there is a need to expand research in this area.
